You’ll find the best and most popular builds for Fortress on this page! For more information regarding situational items, check out our guides for situational items on roams and carries! To see how well this hero performs in the current meta, check out our hero tier list.

The Predator

Fortress is mainly used as an aggressive roam hero that excels at single-target focus and snowballs. There’s usually only one viable build with situational replacements for support heroes.

The burst damage on Fortress’ B, Law of the Claw, is instrumental in securing an early-game lead and maintaining it, so you should max that out first. The slow on its overdrive is also extremely useful. Fortress should max his ultimate, Attack of the Pack, because of the utility it provides as well as its shorter cooldown; it gives Fortress extra fortified health on activation and the wolves can be used to finish off fleeing enemies, as a distracting initiation tactic, or even to track down enemies while taking objectives.

Core Items

Most of the time, supports should always rush Fountain of Renewal first since it provides you with shield, health, and team-wide healing. Next, purchase Crucible for the team reflex block and the extra health. Stormcrown provides Fortress with top-tier cooldown speeds, extra health, and consistent damage which allow for stronger initiations.

War Treads are typical to build on supports, and are especially important on Fortress due to its bonus health. Shiversteel helps peel for your allies (especially against mobile melees such as Taka, Rona, and Koshka) or prevent enemies from escaping. Consider purchasing an Atlas Pauldron if you’re against a hero that relies on attack speed such as SAW, Ringo, or Krul. Aftershock is a good offensive choice for Fortress because of the extra burst it adds in fights. Broken Myth is also a good choice because of the way it amplifies the damage on Fortress’ bleed proc, as well as the damage of his wolves in Attack of the Pack.

The Big Bad Wolf

This build is for using Fortress as a Crystal Power jungle carry. The delayed burst damage from the bleed proc is huge, and this build is known to suddenly burst down enemies, seemingly from nowhere.

The reasoning for Fortress’ skill distribution with this build is essentially the same as above. Law of the Claw is your main source of damage, and the utility from your ultimate is too great to ignore.

Core Items

swift-shooteraftershockbroken-myth

Start a Swift Shooter to speed up your early clears, and make your way towards an Aftershock as your first item for the burst crystal damage and decent cooldown speeds. Then, build Broken Myth for maximum damage on your health procs via Law of the Claw and Attack of the Pack.

As Needed

Halcyon Chargers provide the obvious advantage of picking up boots, but as well give Fortress the energy he doesn’t have. Because Fortress’ ult gives him a huge amount of fortified health, it’s usually best to build selfish defensive items on Fortress to maximize his tankiness. You’ll want to build defense after completing the Broken Myth, if not before. Some players prefer going for a Frostburn instead of an Aftershock, though Aftershock tends to be the more popular choice. Shatterglass is a great choice if you aren’t seeing the damage already.
