The Torch

Skaarf is almost always played as a squishy mage who relies on skillshots and long-ranged poke to output damage. Skaarf is best played in lane.

Like other Mages, Skaarf needs the overdrive on his A skillshot, Spitfire. For Skaarf, this increases the projectile speed, damage, and decreases the cooldown with each rank up. Skaarf should also max out his ultimate due to the shield pierce and raw damage it provides.

Core Items

broken-myth1eve-of-harvestreflex-block

These items are the core of your typical Skaarf. Broken Myth amplifies your damage, and Eve of Harvest is fantastic for sustain. Rushing a Broken Myth first is the best option for Skaarf. Getting both a Broken Myth and Skaarf’s ultimate at around the same time is a large power spike – the ultimate’s huge base damage is amplified by Broken Myth. After Broken Myth, Skaarf should build an Eve of Harvest for sustain. A Reflex Block should usually be built by the time your opponents turn level 6, as many heroes that don’t have stuns until level 6 get them in the form of their ultimates.

These items should be picked up when you need them. Tier 1 Boots obviously should be built earlier in the game, but upgrades to Tier 2 or 3 can wait. Defense items should be built according to who and what you are taking the most damage from. Shatterglass can replace Frostburn if you don’t need the slow in a particular matchup, or it can be built as a fourth offensive item if you don’t need too much defense.

The Slow Burner

This Skaarf build focuses on rushing a Frostburn for extra slows as well as T2 boots to maximize distance from your enemies. As mentioned above, Skaarf is most effective in lane.

The skill distribution and reasoning are the same as they are above!

Core Items

frostburn1Void_BatteryTravel_Bootsbroken-myth1reflex-block

This particular build rushes Frostburn with T1 Boots and a battery completed along the way. After that, you’ll want to upgrade to T2 boots, then build towards a Broken Myth. Build your battery into an Eve of Harvest or Clockwork. As above, a Reflex Block should usually be built by the time your opponents turn level 6, as many heroes that don’t have stuns until level 6 get them in the form of their ultimates.

As Needed

Defensive items are the same as above! You’ll want to finish that Void Battery into an Eve of Harvest or a Clockwork, depending on if you want shorter cooldowns or lifesteal with some extra raw CP.
